Description
This Gothic pricket candlestick is made of cast and turned bronze. The candle could be placed on the pin at the top of the candlestick; the ribbed drip pan caught the melting candle wax. The cast conical foot of the candlestick has a flat knob and a profiled stem. The foot stands on three rectangular legs. The round stem has three knobs. The drip pan has a profiled, raised rim, and the three protrusions, in the same pattern as the legs, in the drip pan provide more stability for the candle.
This kind of candlestick was widely used and produced in the fifteenth century. They were made with one to five knobs; the knobs were both decorative and practical and gave the person holding them a better grip.
