The handle of the knife is carved with the apostle John holding a chalice enclosing a snake.

According to the Bible John was the son of a fisherman named Zebedeüs and the brother of Jacob. When John and his brother Jacob were busy mending their fishing nets, Jesus called out to them to become his students (Marc 1:19-20): they responded immediately an John and Jacob both became Jesus' apostles.
