Description
This elegant blue and white five-piece garniture consists of two open beaker vases and three baluster vases with covers. They are all painted in an underglaze blue with rich scrolling leaves around a couple of large peony flowers, with high petals filled with flowers at the foot and shoulder or rim. The vases all have the same geometrical decoration at the foot, which can also be seen on the covers and the inside of the beaker vases. The covers are painted with floral sprays, the buds are painted blue.
The five-piece garniture, often in this combination of two open vases and three covered vases, was a particularly popular export product during the 18th and early 19th century. The vases were used as decoration on cabinets and chimney pieces, and especially made for the European, and mostly Dutch, market. The five-piece garniture was derived from the Chinese altar garniture, and adopted to the European market.
Height: 24 and 28 cm.
