Description
The outside of the bowl is decorated with ladies who are mastering the four arts. Beneath the ladies are molded petals with a flower design. The inside of the bowl is decorated with boys playing in a landscape.
At the bottom is the Kangxi mark.
The four arts were the four main artistic and academic talents that were required form the stereotype aristocratic Chinese scholar-gentleman. The four arts were the mastery of the:
- Qin, a stringed instrument called guqin
- Qi, the strategy board game weiqi (also called Go in the West and Japan)
- Shu, Chinese calligraphy
- Hua, brush painting
