Description
A half-circular bell with on top a flat loop handle. On one side the bell is decorated with a dragon design in thread relief. The other side is decorated with two cranes facing each other and two flying birds. Along the lower part is a broad band with floral and scroll patterns. The bronze bell has an even green patina overall.
Bells like this were hung on a stand, in order of size and pitch, and were played bij striking the outside of the clapperless bell with a mallet. The size of the bell and the point of the bell that was striked, influenced the sound and volume of the bell. They were used in ritual music from the Zhou to the Han Dynasty.
