Description
This oak casket is richly carved in a typical Frisian way. It is decorated on all sides, even on the base and stands on four ball feet. The front is carved with the coat of arms of the city of Amsterdam, flanked by two lions, within a decorated arch. Below the coat of arms are the initials 'DP'. The sides, bottom and lid of the chest are decorated with detailed, cut-out circle decorations. There are six heart shapes on the lid. The interior of the casket is fitted with two small compartments.
The geometric patterns are typical of traditional Frisian carving. The craft of carving was carried out by fishermen and farmers, in addition to their daily work, and spread throughout the North Sea coast. In addition to the characteristic geometric motifs, the work was inspired by images from picture bibles and engravings.
