Description
A knife and fork with carved ivory handles, depicting a nude and intimately entwined couple. The curly hairstyles of the man and the woman are typical of the fashion of the nobility at the end of the 17th century; a wig for the man and a Fontagne hairstyle with a crest for the woman. These couples, often in matching attire, are also known as 'William and Mary'.
The pairs stand on a flat knob, decorated with carved diamond shapes. The knife has a curved blade and ends in a sharp point. The two-edged fork has a baluster-shaped neck, decorated with knobs and rings.
